Maruti launches limited edition of 'Swift RS' [ + ]

Welcome To Auto Auction

New Delhi: The country's largest car-maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Tuesday introduced a limited edition variant of premium compact Swift which will be Rs 24,500 costlier than the existing model to shore up its sales.

The 'Swift RS' will come with new styling and graphics and will be available only in the VXi and VDi variants. The existing Swift VXi model is priced at Rs 4.99 lakh, and VDi at Rs 5.99 (ex-showroom Delhi).

"The Swift RS is in continuation of Maruti Suzuki's celebrations planned around Swift model as it moves towards the one million cumulative sales mark," MSI Vice President (Marketing) Manohar Bhat said in a statement.

The company has sold over 9.6 lakh Swift cars since its launch in May 2005, he added.

The launch of the new limited edition comes at a time when the company has seen decline in sales in a car market which has been on a prolonged slump.

MSI had posted 7.8 percent decline in domestic sales in June at 77,002 units as compared to over 83,531 units in the same month last year.

The company's sales in the compact segment (comprising the Estilo, Swift and Ritz models) fell 7.2 percent at 20,996 units in June this year as against 22,624 units in the same month a year ago.

"We are confident that limited edition Swift RS will be ideal for customers who look to further enhance the sporty character and style of the Swift," Bhat said.

The Swift RS will be available at Maruti Suzuki dealers from early July 2013 for a limited period, the company said.

Audi rolls out RS 5 Coupe; priced at Rs 95.28 lakh [ - ]

Welcome To Auto Auction

Mumbai: German luxury carmaker Audi, which launched RS 5 Coupe Tuesday, said it will soon increase prices of its models by up to 3 percent to protect its margins in view of steep fall in the rupee.

"We will increase prices by 2-3 percent. We have no option but to pass on some costs to customers. The price hike may take place between July and August," Audi India head Michael Perschke told reporters after the launch here.

The Audi RS 5 Coupe is priced at Rs 95.28 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai).

Perschke said the rupee has seen a sharp fall in the last couple of weeks and this has affected the margins significantly.

Audi had last increased prices in January, he said, adding, "We also did some adjustments in our SUV prices after the budget."

The government had increased the excise duty on SUVs above 4-meters to 30 percent from 27 percent in the budget.

Under the current definition by the Finance Ministry for the taxation purpose, SUVs which are above the 4-metre length, and having an engine of 1500cc or above along with 170mm ground clearance attract excise of 30 percent as against 27 percent earlier.

Audi India has continued to maintain its growth momentum in the domestic luxury car market by selling of 4,846 units in the January-June period, posting a growth of 21 percent over the corresponding period a year ago, he said, adding the company sold 750 units in June, a growth of 4 percent.

"We are confident of maintaining the sales momentum and meeting our target of selling 10,800 cars this year. So far this year, we have launched six models including the RS 5 Coupe and we aim to roll out another 3-4 new models and variants in the remaining part of the year," he said.

Audi India plans to expand its network to 34 dealerships by end-2013 from its existing 26. It has opened new showrooms in Bhubaneswar, Lucknow and south Mumbai.

Audi sells the A4, A6, A7 Sportback, A8L, Q3, Q5, Q7, S4, the new RS 5 Coup?, TT Coup?, R8, R8-V10 plus and the R8 Spyder in the country.

Mercedes E Class launched at Rs 41.51 lakh [ - ]

Welcome To Auto Auction

New Delhi: German luxury car maker Mercedes Benz Tuesday said it expects India to be among its top ten global markets by 2020, as it continues to bring latest models and spread sales network in the country.

The company which launched the new E Class model priced between Rs 41.51 lakh and Rs 44.48 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) said it will look to reduce the time gap between global showcase of a new model and its launch in India as part of its aggressive business strategy for the country.

"Tuesday the Indian market is not in the top ten global markets in terms of volumes for Mercedes but we believe in the potential of the market. Our expectation is that it will be in the top ten by 2020," Mercedes Benz India Managing Director and CEO Eberhard Kern told PTI.

Commenting on the potential of the Indian market, he said: "The base on which we are working is that by 2020 the overall car market in India will be 7 million units, up from 2.6 million last year."

Of the total, the share of the luxury segment will be 4 percent by 2020, as compared to 1.2 percent last year, he added.

"So the potential is huge in India and we are preparing ourself for the future although 2013 will not be a good year for the auto sector here," Kern said.

The company has been focusing on new product launches and network expansion.

"The new E Class is yet another example of our efforts to bring the latest global product in India at the shortest possible time. It was showcased globally in January at Detroit auto show and commercially launched in Europe in March and in June it is in India," Kern said.

Going forward, the effort will be to reduce the time further, although "for the Indian market we have to have a right hand drive car and diesel is a must", he said.

He said the E Class has been the company's flagship model and with the launch of this new model, the company expects sales to grow further.

"Globally 11 million units have been sold across five generations of the E Class and in India we have sold over 23,000 units since it was launched in 1995," Kern said.

The E Class will be available in both petrol and diesel options. While the petrol version is powered by a 2 litre engine, the diesel has a 2.2 litre engine. The company is also offering a special launch edition of the new E Class at Rs 49.9 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

While Kern did not comment on the exact numbers expected from the new E Class, he said Mercedes Benz India has been able to grow total sales by 5.3 percent in the first quarter of 2013 to over 2,000 units.

Overall, the company is targeting a double digit growth in sales this year from a total of 7,138 units sold last year, he added.

The company will launch the diesel version of its luxury compact car B Class model shortly followed by the sedan S Class later this year.

On the network expansion, Kern said this year, the company will add ten new outlets. Currently, it has 57 showrooms in 32 cities across the country.

"We continue to expand both in metros and smaller towns. Currently Delhi and Mumbai account for 45 percent of total sales and rest from the remaining locations," he said.

The company is also adding new outlets in Vadodara, Kozhikode, Bhubaneshwar, among others this year.
